G&G Desk Part 5

Friday, September 19th, 2014

I made my drawer slides using a sliding dovetail.  This type of slide offers the advantage of preventing the drawer from tipping forward when extended.  I also finished the top and started on the breadboard ends. I hope to have this project finished within a couple weeks. All that I have left is to finish the breadboard ends and work on the drawer pulls.

I am really happy with how well this project is coming together!

Drawers and Slides – Finished

Wednesday, September 10th, 2014

I installed the male component of the drawer slides in the case (which can be a little tricky with regard to the alignment) and everything went smoothly. To fully complete the drawers I need to make the drawer pulls, but this will wait until after the top is made (I need a break from the drawers).

Next up: The top which will have breadboard edges, ebony splines, and ebony plugs.

Dovetail Slides

Tuesday, September 9th, 2014

I’m a big fan of sliding dovetails for drawer slides.  The main advantage, in my opinion, is that they eliminate the need for a drawer kicker.  That is, the dovetailed drawer slide prevents the drawer from tipping when extended.  They are fairly easy to make and in my next video release of the G&G desk build, I will show my method of doing this.  The idea of using a sliding dovetail for a drawer slide is certainly not my idea or novel, but I might have my own take on the process.
